Wie können mehr Mehrfamilienhäuser saniert werden? © Projektträger Jülich / Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH

How can more multi-family homes undergo retrofitting?

More than half of Germany’s living spaces are located in multi-family homes. Many of them are rented out. The Stable research project shows how more apartments can be retrofitted in agreement between tenants and landlords.

The research project takes place in two multi-family homes in Berlin, both of which are to undergo climate-friendly and socially-compatible retrofitting. There are two old gas boilers in the cellar, which are taking their toll on the buildings’ climate performances.

Researchers from RWTH Aachen University and Dortmund Technical University are working on a modern energy solution that benefits both tenants and owners. Throughout the entire project, tenants are regularly surveyed to make sure their needs are factored into the planning.

In the video, Larissa Kühn and Karl Seeger from the RWTH Aachen University explain what the major challenges are for landlords and tenants. Stephanie Bund from Dortmund Technical University highlights the importance of involving all those affected by the work in the planning. Tenants also have their say. Karsten Witt from HOWOGE (a housing association) explains how the project will improve the footprint of the two multi-family homes: The housing association gains insights into the use patterns of tenants, which helps with the development of the perfect technical solution.
