Heizen mit Geothermie: So einfach ist der Regionen-Check © Projektträger Jülich / Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH

Using geothermal energy for heating: quickly check if it works in your region

Environmentally-friendly heat pumps can also be powered by geothermal heat. Soon, it will be easy to check whether that’s an option in your region – a traffic light system is being set up at geotis.de, with some overview maps already online.

The ‘WärmeGut’ project supplies maps using a traffic light system to give users a quick overview as to whether their region is suitable for the use of near-surface geothermal energy. A click to your region will give you one of the following results:

- Green: Geothermal energy can be used without limitations.
- Amber: Usable with limitations.
- Red: Use of geothermal energy currently not recommended.

Prof. Inga Moeck from the LIAG Institute for Applied Geophysics highlights the project’s importance for promoting the use of near-surface geothermal energy. The maps are based on data supplied by the geological services of the Länder. The maps for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are already available online. At present, the researchers on the ‘WärmeGut’ project are working together with all Länder to draw up the missing maps.
