Plenty of potential to save energy when heating
Want to save on heating costs and help the climate? If you want to know how much potential there is to save energy in your own four walls, the 2022 Heizspiegel provides current comparative figures on heating energy consumption, heating costs and carbon emissions. Here are the key facts:
Efficient heating could cut costs by about €19 billion across Germany and reduce climate-damaging emissions by around 65 million tonnes of CO2 a year. These figures are derived from the difference between buildings whose energy performance has been improved and unimproved buildings.
Heating costs were more than twice as high in unimproved buildings
According to these figures, residents of a 70 m2 apartment paid a average of €545 last year for their heating in a gas-heated multiple-family dwelling whose energy performance had been much improved. Where a comparable building’s energy performance was poor, the heating costs were more than twice as high, standing at approximately €1,180. And the damaging carbon dioxide emissions were also correspondingly higher. This shows that heating costs and carbon emissions can be significantly and lastingly cut by improvements in the energy performance of buildings.

Even simple everyday steps to save energy, such as ventilating in an energy-saving way, modern thermostats and a water-saving shower head cut consumption and costs. Other improvements, such as thermal insulation of buildings, are also possible.
